Scenic

The Atherton Tablelands is a treasure trove of natural wonders and gourmet delights. Shaped by volcanic activities, the diversity of this rural landscape is quite impressive, featuring lush mountains, green valleys, sparkling lakes and streams, spectacular waterfalls, endless plains, grassy savannahs and pockets of ancient World Heritage listed rainforest. Here the temperatures and humidity are generally lower, farming thrives and wildlife abounds. Among the rolling hills dairy cattle graze on green pastures and farms grow tea, coffee, nuts, corn, vegetables and flowers for local and export markets. Charming small townships come alive with weekend country markets, these are a fascinating treat with locals sharing their arts, crafts, music and festivities. People who choose to live here are united by community, culture and heritage, their love of nature, and the abundant wildlife.

The Landscape

Situated between the Bellenden Ker Range and the Great Dividing Range, the landscape and fertility of the soils in the region can be attributed to the volcanic origins of the land. One of the most richest and diverse biological ecosystems in Australia; the Tablelands features open eucalypts forest to the north (similar to much of the tropical outback), whilst the south has a higher rainfall allowing dense tropical rainforest to flourish. Wet Scierophyll and Mabi forests add to the natural diversity of the region. The rural landscape of the Atherton Tableland is green throughout most of the year. Everything thrives on this cool tropical plateau where temperatures and humidity are generally lower. Crops grown in and around Atherton include banana, sugarcane, corn/maize, avocados, strawberries, macadamia nuts and mangoes and citrus.

Things to See

Birdwatching attracts global attention; of the 430 bird species found in the Wet Tropics, 327 of them are seen on the Atherton Tablelands with twelve bird species endemic to the region. Wildlife is abundant on the Tablelands as the Wet Tropics region is home to about a third of Australia's 315 mammal species. Here you will get to experience a great range of native Australian tropical wildlife in their natural environment.

The Lumholtz’s Tree-kangaroo is listed ‘near threatened’ and lives in rainforests and the adjacent wet sclerophyll forests. Good places to spot them are at the Curtain Fig Tree, Peterson Creek area near Yungaburra, Mt Hypipamee National Park, Malanda Falls and Wongabel State Forest. Try looking first thing in the morning or late afternoon, or by torch at night. The Musky Rat-Kangaroo is regularly seen around the volcanic lakes Eacham and Barrine and around the bases of the famous Curtain Fig and Cathedral Fig trees on the Atherton Tablelands. Look for them in the morning and afternoon foraging for fruit on the forest floor.

The Atherton Tablelands is home to 17 of the nation's most spectacular waterfalls. The most popular visited are the southern waterfalls which include Millaa Millaa, Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls. Millaa Millaa Falls is regarded as one of the most photographed waterfalls in all of Australia. The falls are framed by spectacular lush rainforest and tropical plants, which cascade perfectly into a pristine waterhole below.

Hot Air Ballooning

The fleet of Hot Air Balloon Flights launch from a range of private properties spread over the Atherton Tablelands. The fertile plains and rolling hills of the Atherton Tablelands brings a mix of some amazing patterns and images when viewed from a hot air balloon above, you may even catch a glimpse of a kangaroo or two. Sunrise provides the perfect conditions for hot air ballooning and makes for an incredible memorable experience. Watch as the balloons are inflated, then take to the skies in a 30 minute scenic balloon flight and enjoy the fun and excitement as you help to pack up the balloons at the end.
