Malanda

Updated: 03-Mar-2014

Malanda, Is known as "the pretty place" and is partially surrounded by rainforest. The Malanda Falls are on the edge of town, and has a good Environmental Centre. There is a historic Movie Theatre still in operation and some great shops.

It is the centre of the Tablelands dairy industry boasting the only successful commercial dairy industry in the tropics.

The newly opened Malanda Dairy Centre offers locally sourced foods, a display featuring the history of the Tableland dairy industry and tours of the adjoining Malanda Dairyfarmers Factory.

The Majestic Theatre situated in the Malanda township was opened in 1929 to cater for entertainment, dancing, theatricals and film evenings. Not much has changed over the years; two movies are shown every Friday and Saturday night at 7:30pm & 9:30pm. You can sit in the original deckchairs and bring your own cushion!

The Malanda Falls recreation area is located at the other end of town and feeds into the local swimming pool. It incorporates a picnic and BBQ area set in the rainforest.

The Falls also has an environmental information centre that features the volcanic history of the area, and a café.

Local wildlife in the area includes many species of rare rainforest animals and birds such as tree climbing kangaroos, platypus, echidnas, cassowary, bandicoots and possums.

For its size Malanda offers a very good range of shopping. There are some great specialty shops selling local crafts and antiques. There are also a number of cafes and takeaway food outlets in town. The impressive timber and tin Malanda Hotel has been a feature in the town since 1911, and offers a very good menu. The Malanda Dairy Centre features the ‘Tastes of the Tablelands’ with locally sourced foods.
