Ravenshoe Township

Updated: 22-Jun-2006

Ravenshoe is the highest town in Queensland at 920 metres. It is located 147 kms from Cairns and takes approximately 2 hours to drive.

Originally an old timber town, Ravenshoe is one of Queensland's charming rural towns due to its isolation and creative population. The community is a growing vibrant one, offering plenty of arts and crafts. There is a pretty historic steam train called Millstream Express, which you can ride at the weekends for a scenic journey north to Tumoulin. The train winds through the forests surrounding the Millstream River.

Local attractions include the Millstream Falls, which is a spectacular sight especially during the wet season, when it becomes the widest waterfall in Australia, and the Little Millstream Falls. There are also a number of hiking trails known as the Misty Mountain Trails.

The Ravenshoe visitor centre features a number of historical and environmental displays. There are sections on the Aboriginal culture, the timber industry, the dairy farming and the army during WWII. There is also a display on bats and a noctarium where visitors can go ‘artificial night spotting’.

East of Ravenshoe is an incredible wind farm housing 20 wind turbines. Known for its permanent and hefty winds, the Windy Hill Volcano has become the site of Australia’s largest wind farm. As you drive over the rolling hills, enormous white fan blades supported by huge poles emerge in front of you. From the top of the volcano views of the ocean near Innisfail can be seen on a clear day, to the west the views stretch as far as Undara Volcano located 125km away.
