Davies Creek
Updated: 14-Feb-2012Davies Creek
Just 10 minutes from Mareeba, Davis Creek National Park provides visitors with a true Australian bushland experience. Davis Creek conserves a granite landscape set in eucalypt forest. The creek flows over huge granite boulders creating the perfect setting for picnicking or camping.
Well maintained amenities are provided, there is a picnic area and camping ground with a self-registration booth where you can fill out a camping permit. There are bushwalking tracks and lookouts over the valley.
The protected National Park environment also features the magnificent 75m high Davis Creek Falls that are relatively easy to access.
An all-weather access road leads you to the Davis Creek National Park. It is a gravel road, however corrugations and narrow turning points make it unsuitable for caravans.
Emerald Creek Falls
Emerald Creek Falls is perfect spot for a picnic, swimming and short walks up to the falls. Located on the dry western slopes of the Lamb Range, this is a lovely area to visit at the end of the wet season when the flowering plants are radiant and colourful.
The falls form a series of cascades over smoothed granite boulders. There is a section of rapids formed by the creek water cascading over large granite boulders that offers the perfect photo opportunity.
A walking track can take you to both the top and bottom of the falls. The 700m walk to the lookout at the top begins near the carpark following Emerald Creek, and offers extensive views both of the falls and of the valley towards Mareeba. The base of the falls has a deep waterhole, which can be accessed by a walking track. Further along are a series of inviting rock pools on the trail if you wish to swim.
The Emerald Creek turnoff is just 5 minutes out of Mareeba. The last 7km of road is unsealed. The road is unsuitable for caravans and trailers.
